But for real, for me, I feel like with the red lipstick thing it all depends on the pair of complexion. I'm just being for real. You have to be fair skinned to get away with that.

I love to wear red lipstick a lot, even in the daytime.

THE BEST BRUSH STORAGE FOR YOUR PERSONALITY

When you’re at a loss for brush storage solutions, it’s easy to grab a glass from your pantry and call it a day. But your makeup collection needs to have a little personality sitting atop your vanity, and so should the canisters and containers that hold your precious tools. Keep these ideas in mind the next time you’re craving a tabletop makeover.

Geek-chic
Beakers aren’t just for chemical experiments anymore. A wide lip and a load of different sizes make scientific glass containers an ideal option for those who consider their vanity a makeshift beauty laboratory (and full disclosure: they’re what we use and love). Shop this scientific glassware online or at a university bookstore.

Shabby-chic
Cute to boot, easy to obtain, and multipurpose in every way, mason jars are one of our favorite makeshift brush holders. Available at practically every craft store (and in bulk!), the embossed containers can be spray painted gold for an extra luxe touch.

Art-chic
A makeup artist’s tools are just as important as a painter’s pigment-splashed brushes. To mirror the artistry of your technique, place your bristles in ceramic cups and pottery. You can easily find an inexpensive set at your local Japantown (they serve double-duty as tea cups as well!), or create a custom-colored cup at a paint-your-own-pottery venue

Sleek-chic
If simplicity is core to your identity, go slick and shiny with an austere acrylic canister. Turn to Japanese minimalist brand MUJI, whose popular clear acrylic trays are the epitome of simplicity in makeup design. Their translucent acrylic pot lets you see through to your brush handles like glass, but its lightweight feel is easier to handle.

HOW TO DO A SOCK BUN.

How To Do A Sock Bun - The Secret To A Pretty Bun

We already showed you how to create big, beautiful buns. While the DIY sock bun may seem intimidating, it's actually one of the easiest—and quickest!—techniques to boost the volume of your topknot. Kate Bosworth, Jennifer Lopez, and Beyonce have all rocked the polished wrap for big events, and the elegant style works everywhere from the red carpet to the weekend. Why not try this sock bun tutorial for yourself!

WHAT YOU'LL NEED
1 sock
A pair of scissors
Bobby pins
Any sock made from a thinner fabric will work. Opt for a brown or taupe shade (something that resembles your hair color, although it doesn’t have to be an exact match) as a white or a bright-colored sock might peek through your strands and give away your bun’s secret.

STEP 1: CREATE SOCK DOUGHNUT AND PONYTAIL

How To Do A Sock Bun - Create Sock Doughnut And Ponytail

Cut off the toe area of the sock, and roll the fabric tube from the inside out into a doughnut shape. Pull hair back into a high ponytail and secure with elastic at the crown.

STEP 2: PUT DOUGHNUT ON PONY, THEN TUCK AND ROLL

How To Do A Sock Bun - Put Doughnut On Pony

Place the sock doughnut around the base of the ponytail and pull all of your hair through the hole. Then, pull the doughnut from the base of the head all the way to the ends of your pony.

How To Do A Sock Bun - Tuck And Roll

Starting from the end of your pony, begin tucking and rolling the ends around sock doughnut. You should use the same motion you used to roll up the sock in the first step—flip the bottom side of the doughnut upward from the inside out with both hands. While you tuck and roll, try to disperse hair evenly all the way around the doughnut, but don't worry about completely covering it. Your hair will naturally spread out as you work.

STEP 3: ROLL SOCK DOWN TO BASE

How To Do A Sock Bun - Roll Sock Down To Base

Continue to slowly roll the sock (along with your hair) down the ponytail until you reach the base. As you roll, tuck loose strands underneath the doughnut. When you reach the base, fill in gaps in the bun’s structure by gently spreading hair out.
STEP 4: SECURE HAIR WITH BOBBY PINS

Tidy up loose ends and strands by pinning them around the base. To make the bun flipper, gently tug and tease strands from canter portion of the bun outward.

ARE YOU APPLYING MAKEUP IN THE RIGHT ORDER?

There is a natural order to accomplishing most anything in life: Lather, rinse, repeat. Love, marriage, baby in a carriage. High school, college, job (if you’re lucky). But some things, like putting on a fresh face of makeup, are a little more complicated.

What do you do first: Apply lipstick or focus on eyes? Where does blush come in? Can you get away with putting liner on after mascara? We talked with Cristina Bartolucci, NYX’s chief creative director and co-founder of DuWop, who gave us her formula for putting together a perfect face. Of course, not everyone will use all steps, but even if you skip the powder or cheeks, this is a still a good working order to follow!

1: Primer or Moisturizer
“Choose one, not both,” Bartolucci says. “Moisturizer, no matter how light in texture, will interfere with the function of a primer.” Also, always remember to get in your sunscreen, whether SPF is built into your primer, moisturizer, or foundation.

2: Foundation
“I do not believe in doing the eyes first to avoid fallout,” Bartolucci says, noting that fallout is bound to happen when you are using eye shadow. ”When product falls onto bare skin, the pigment can be even harder to remove. It’s better to create a canvas with the foundation and then correct any mistakes as a finishing touch.”

3: Concealer
“Here is where you look at your face with a critical eye and add concealer sparingly,” says Bartolucci. She recommends only on blemishes or dark circles. “You want to wait until after the foundation because foundation will do a lot of the job for you.”

4: Powder
“Set it all with a very light dusting of translucent powder. This will help make it easier to remove fallout from eye shadow and give the base time to settle in while you apply the rest of your makeup.”

5: Eyes or lips
“I like to mix them up,” says Bartolucci. “After the face, I usually do the eyes first, but sometimes I’ll start with the lips because it gives me time to think about what I really want to do on the eyes.”

For Eyes: shadow > liner > then mascara. This is the order Bartolucci follows for applying eye makeup. “But always go back and layer,” she suggests. “Add a little more liner at the lash line, an extra pop of shimmer shadow in the center of the lid, etc.”

For Lips: balm > liner > lipstick > then gloss. Bartolucci suggests smudging liner all over your lips and rubbing it in with fingertips before applying lipstick. And of course, use gloss only if you want!

6: Cheeks
“I do the cheeks last for two reasons. One, it ties the eyes and lips together. Two, if you’re using a powder, you can sweep it across the lids after the eye makeup is done to add an extra pop

Pile It On: 5 Ways to Get Creative With Layering

If your idea of layering consists of piling on a few winter duds or stacking a couple of bangles here and there, we are here to show you five different ways to pile on your style without going overboard. From ring stacking to outfit layering, here are some stylish tips you need to add to your fashion arsenal to take your outfit to the next level.
Layering Necklaces

Layering Necklaces

Layering necklaces is a bit more complicated than stacking bracelets. Rather than just piling them on with abandon, you have to learn how to master the right proportions, for a look that is chic and intriguing, rather than sloppy and childlike. The key is to make sure each chain is a different length — varying textures also help when trying to achieve that cool curated effect.

Stacking Rings

Stacking Rings

For a maximum layering effect, take note of fashion's biggest trendsetters that are loading multiple fingers with several types of rings. From edgy chrome knuckledusters to sparkly cocktail rings, when it comes to stacking rings together, it's all about mixing and seeing what looks right. Just make sure none of the rings you are sporting are too tight, a look with results both unflattering and painful.

Loading Up On Tops

Loading Up On Tops

If in the past you avoided layering clothing out of fear of looking bigger than you actually are, it's because you haven't mastered the art of great layering. Not only will chic layers give you tons of style points, but you can actually complement your form by piling on the right mix.

Primary Colors: Designers Get Back to Basics for Fall

Embellished and Beautiful

As we all remember from grade school art class, primary colors red, blue and yellow can be combined to create any color in the universe. But this season, designers decided to keep their mixing palettes at bay and let the originals shine. Saturated, true hues were seen on not a few runways and provided a nice respite from the typical earth tones and neutrals that usually rule fall. Take a color trip and check out some of these vibrant looks.

Fall’s Top Runway Color Trends: The Bold, Bright and Beautiful

imaxtree

It's long been understood that fall is the time to bring out your cozy colors. And by cozy, we mean safe; the blacks, navys and grays that you can get lost in and be totally unself-conscious wearing. This is the time for your coffee shop attire, right? Sink into a baggy sweater, scone and some crazy sweet latte while catching up on email. No need to sit up straight in that skimpy sundress. While that's all well and good, designers this season are challenging you to don color. Sure you might be tempted to keep your posture in mind, but it doesn't have to be intimidating. There are still plenty of ways you can stay comfy while being the bright spot in your barrista's day.

Take a cue from some of our favorite designers. It's not about bodycon, but showing off your style in a way that gets you noticed for your skills mixing up shape and form. Ralph Lauren and Stella McCartney used purple to amazing effect, one keeping to slim layers, mixing textures, the other keeping it ultra simple with a flowing dress that could be belted or worn loose, depending on your mood. A few designers decided to borrow Valentino red and make it their own. From a chic little sweater and skirt set to a velvet gown, they show there's truly no wrong occasion to wear the hue. That's not all, check out our favorite color trends for fall. And yes, for all of us who refuse to let go of black and gray, you'll be inspired by interesting styling that will have you thinking twice about your typical go-tos.
